Astronaut Steve W. Lindsey

NASA Astronaut Steven W. Lindsey, commander of Space Shuttle Discovery STS-121, launched into space on July 4, 2006.  This historic return-to-flight mission, which lasted 13 days, focused on the testing of new equipment and procedures that increase the safety of space shuttles and the repair of a rail car on the International Space Station.

Lindsey has logged over 1,203 hours in space aboard four shuttle missions. He served as pilot on STS-87 in 1997 and STS-95 in 1998, and was the mission commander on STS-104 in 2001 and STS-121 in 2006.

Lindsey graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1982.  He has logged over 5,000 hours of flying time in more than 50 different types of aircraft.  He retired as a colonel in the U.S. Air Force on Sept. 1, 2006 after 24 years of service.

Our replica of the Space Shuttle Discovery was dedicated to Astronaut Lindsey during his visit to Space Camp Turkey on Oct. 10, 2006.
